What is Mead?
London will be brewing Mead again for the first time in hundreds of years at Gosnells Meadery in Stoke Newington. Cornish Mead is an historically British drink. Served in the palaces and great halls it was a drink preserved for centuries. But when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, where Mead was traditionally made, the art form fell into disuse until recent times when the ancient recipes have been revived in Cornwall, and Mead is being rediscovered by a new generation of Englishmen. Mead typically has honey overtones but is not particularly sweet. It is rather rich, like a port or good sherry, so you sip it or enjoy in a cocktail.
